Why you don't need to be a geek to enjoy science fiction

You would think that nearly everyone who enjoys science fiction is a geek. This is not as true as you may think. Science fiction covers such a broad range of topics. You have probably watched some television shows that did not have you think, "This is science fiction." You probably thought it was just fiction and left it at that.

One that pops into mind is Wizards of Waverly Place, which is a funny Disney program for young and pre-teens. It is about a family that are all wizards, and how the children are trying to cope with their abilities in a normal society. Of course, their parents are their main source of learning the ropes of their craft. Yet, this is sci-fi without all the outer-space, clinical labs, etc.

An excellent sci-fi movie which came out in 1997 with Jodie Foster was the award winning "Contact This movie seems at first to be a general sci-fi movie that only a guy would enjoy, but with Jodie Foster as the lead many women were interested in viewing this movie. One could almost say that this movie in particular was what brought many women around to watching more sci-fi. The movie industry was focusing on bringing out more women to see this genre of movies.

Animal Planet watchers have many men and women glued to the screens to see what dinosaurs may have looked like and what might happen to our planet if we do not find a way to be green. The History channel shows some similar programs as well, in addition to how things could have looked in the past. In some ways this are other forms of sci-fi, but with more fact than fiction. Again, science fiction comes in many forms.

These past two or three years have had writers and producers cranking out more science fiction stories than there were in the past decade. Viewers range from children to the elderly. What is more is the number of science fiction books that don the shelves at libraries. Science fiction books nearly account for almost half the book sales in book stores, and readership in public libraries.

A good example of a sci-fi movie for any age was The Chronicles of Narnia written by C. S. Lewis, and adapted to a screenplay by Ann Peacock and Andrew Adamson. Children of all ages were probably begging to see this movie. Many adults may have read the book long before the movie ever came about, and yet still went to the theatres. You do not have to be a geek to enjoy this movie either.

When you stop and think about tall the movies, television shows and books that are based on science fiction you may begin to wonder what happened to all of the non-fiction drama, action or comedy that you grew up on. Think about the people who write these stories. Many of them are old and may not be a genius on a computer or know much about electronics, chemicals and such other things dealing with science. They just do the research to learn what they do not already know.

Science fiction is a fun get-a-way from reality and expands ones mind. It gets you to thinking about what other possibilities there are which could be very well conceivable.
