Album reviews: Viva La Vida, by Coldplay

by Shanna Campbell

Created on: March 12, 2009

Coldplay has been hailed as the greatest band of our time. Not only have they achieved world-wide fame and success, the band themselves had made their mark on cultural and environmental issues around the world.

The band has released 3 prior albums to Viva La Vida (Or Death and All His Friends) and Prospekts March (the continuation of Viva). Parachutes launched the band to success with hits like Yellow, Trouble and Shiver. Next came arguably the band's best album to date, A Rush Of Blood to the Head. This album featured songs written by Martin with dedications to his now wife, Gwenyth Paltrow, and life touring with the band. In My Place, written for Paltrow, was an award winning hit, followed by Clocks (used on numerous sound tracks such as Peter Pan), the Scientist (one of the most beautiful songs ever!) and God Put a Smile Upon Your Face. Next was the highly anticipated X&Y, with the launch hit of Speed of Sound. This album really sort of portrayed the bands new electronic sound with a more abstract approach to their writing and sound. Talk, for example, is a sample of the European band Kraftwerk, which brings a whole new light on the band's inspiration and image. X&Y was been seen as less of a success and more of a "rush" album to simply satisfied a fan base too eager to wait for some real material. It came with Viva La Vida (Or Death and All His Friends). The album is a concept based around the struggles of a world and economy at war. Martin seems to have portrayed him and himself as a physically wounded soldier trying to deal with the issues that have come about in his travels and love life.

Life in Techicolour opens the album with no lyrics. This track is actually a sample of one of the band's unfinished songs that would be released on Prospekt. It's a tease to a fantastic B side that you MUST listen to in order to appreciate this interlude. It's lyrics contain Martin's apparent favourite new phrase "now my feet won't touch the ground". Let's see.

That song... spin me round, now my feet won't touch the ground from Strawberry Swing... oh my..at least in 2 more songs on Prospekt. Listen for yourselves.

My absolute favourite track is Lost!. It is one of several versions of this amazing song: Lost! is the album version with regular band, Lost? is Chris Martin accoustic on the piano and Lost + is featured on Prospekts March and was radio released for limited time featuring the Jigga Man himself... Chris Martin's buddy... Jay Z. He gives a shout out to Chris
