Prenuptial agreement has failure of marriage written all over it. Now, the unity of a couple in holy matrimony is not sacred and destined to last forever anymore. Instead, "think of it as a business arrangement or as an insurance policy to help remove some of the emotion that's naturally involved", says Nancy Dunnan, a New York City financial adviser and author. Sure, it's just business as usual, the odd part is when she says " to help remove some of the emotion that's naturally involved". In other hands think of something else while I reach in your pocket and take your money.
Should it be compulsory? No, in my opinion, it should be voluntary and thought through very well. Everyone is entitled to do whatever they please; even if it means to arrange something before marriage, "just in case". I did some research about the topic, I found some interesting data that seems a bit contradictory to our recent beliefs of what all this is about. On a broad informational website (bankrate.com), I read that a prenuptial agreement does not just deal with a preemptive procedure for a marriage, but it also covers death from either one of the newlyweds. Isn't that a "will"? Very interesting thought to analyze by the way.
It just doesn't sound like an agreement of such magnitude should be implied or come into thought by a couple that "supposedly" loves each other with an unconditional type of mutual affection. My way of thinking might sound old fashioned and covered by ideological blinders, but I just cant agree with a "just in case we stop loving each other" kind of thinking, in some cases. Before a person considers marriage, a fair amount of time should be spent with the future husband/wife to know for sure if he/she is the one.
Of course, if you look at it from the other side of the coin, it is strictly business as usual like Nancy said. But with a lawyer earning as much as $500 an hour for a prenuptial agreement procedure, who would really want to go through such headache? Time goes by so fast, and ways of life change even faster. It's up to the person to make life even more complicated that it already is. I do believe that in life there should be precautions of all types, but the old ways are left in the past most of the time and not recognized as better that the present ones, at some times.
As bankrate.com informed me more about the wonderful world of prenuptial agreement, the more I realized and tried to think ahead about how our way of life itself will be in the future. If 1 of 3 newlywed couples end up in divorce, what will the ratio be in the near future? And how come they didn't compare that ratio with one from 25 years ago? Nancy is right about being business as usual. I also believe that very slowly but surely, we will loose in the near future, the credibility of a loving and lasting marriage. The prenuptial agreement is sort of a scapegoat for many, for some it's not even in their vocabulary. For that, I applaud. Not just for choosing not to get involved in that mess, but because their marriage or future marriage core, will be or is, based upon stronger beliefs other than material things and money.
