What to consider when you are thinking about a career move.
A career move can be a move up in a career or a career change. Whichever you are considering, the process you go through and the analysis of the situation are about the same. Here are some things to consider when you are thinking about a career move:
1. Consider if the career move or change is what is best for you. It's important to analyze where you are and where you want to go in your career. Does this move take you in the direction you want to go? Is this move in your career a jump to the next step or does it jump many steps? If it jumps many steps, is the move too big?
2. Evaluate the career move or career change to determine if it is what you want to be doing with your employment time. What are the individual components of the new career or new job within your career? Sometimes we think that the move before us in our career path is the only way to go. That's not always the case, Determine if there are other paths or if this is the one for you.
3. If you are making a career change, determine if you need more training or education to be successful. If you decide that you do, then get the training or education before making the career change. By gaining that training, you will increase your chances for success in your new position.
4. When considering a career move it is important to consider the job availability in your new path. If jobs are few and far between, is it an area that will be hard to break into? Consider your chances for attaining one of those coveted positions. Are you putting your efforts into something that is feasible for you?
5. Consider the financial ramifications of your career move. If you are changing careers, does the new career you are considering provide a salary that meets your needs and those of your family. In many cases, when people change careers to switch to something they truly love to do, they don't mind a reduction in pay. For example, people in the corporate world often change to become teachers or artists, etc. It's wonderful to follow your dream, but you must consider the reality of a new financial structure. In addition, if your are making a move within your current career, it is also important to consider the financial ramifications.
When considering a career move, it is always best to consider the requirements within the new position and whether the move will stimulate you and provide you with job satisfaction. Above all, that's an important factor in whether you are happy with the choices you make when considering a career move.
