THE SICKNESS

We tend to take for granted life's joys. Flowers, the sun, green grass, and memories. Now they are all gone. They were all swallowed up by a dark cloud of smoke. Some say we were under nuclear warfare and others say that it was a government test that went awfully wrong. All I know is it came sudden and without warning. The skies turned grey, animals began to become rabid and die. Holly, our next door neighbor ran outside her house screaming when it happened. She was trying to talk to anybody that would listen and try to explain to them that FiFi, her grey Poodle was in the house biting chunks of skin off and eating her then dead German Shepard. No one was ready for the effects that the grey clouds would have on humans. First it would start with cold like symptoms, a sniffle here, a cough there, and maybe even a fever that would come and go. Emergency rooms began filling up daily when the sicknesses would go from cold symptoms to flu like symptoms and from there a flesh eating disease. There were those of us who were immune to it. No one knew why, everyone was too busy trying to survive to figure it out.

This was nothing like the movies. Military did not show up and save the day and there was no vaccine. We were quarantined and left to die or fend for ourselves. The uninfected world turned their backs on us as if we did not exist. There was no problem alienating us we were on an Island. New York once a city of life and living was now a wasteland for the dead. The surrounding burrows were closed down and any transportation discarded of. Train tunnels were blocked. Every now and then you can hear a military helicopter making rounds. They collected bodies once or twice a week to experiment on.

After a while the sick became sicker and it did not end there. The bodies that were buried would end up missing. At first it was thought that someone was stealing bodies or that the military was sneaking onto the island and taking more bodies until one day the dead began to awaken and walk. Not only this but they began eating live humans. You could hear screams all over the inner city. People running for their lives. People burning the dead of family members to make sure they didn't return. My family was few of the people that were immune to the illness but we buried many friends and their families only to watch them return from the dead to feast on the living.

I am praying that someone on the outside gets this letter so that when or if it has happened again they will know what is immenent. It seems that the only way to kill them is by penetrating the brain either buy gun shot or sharp object. I am also writing this letter in hopes that someone on the outside will find us and help us to leave the city. As for now we try to survive the best way that we can. I need to close this letter now it is almost night and this is the time that they are out mostly. I hope to God someone hears our plea for help before it is too late.
