A "guy film" may not be specified as a concept in any dictionary, but most people understand the general idea. The "chick flick" is probably a concept that is better understood by people and it is probably used by more individuals. When guys go to films there is often action, adventure, violence, humor, and some combination of adrenaline-rush activities. At least that is the stereotypical assumption about films that are seen by the group of fellas. Specifically, here are a few films that most guys expect other guys to see.
Braveheart
Mel Gibson running around with a big sword and giving a passionate speech while wearing crazy face paint. This is what guy films are all about. Macho behavior. Freedom. Valour. Sword fighting. Most guys have seen Braveheart at least once and they can quote, "They can take our lives, but they can't take our FREEDOM!"
Gladiator
Russell Crowe plays the disgraced Roman general who ends up in the gladiator stadium and has to fight to survive. Again, we have the ultimate tough guy who must battle warrior, tigers, and Roman leaders. The film features epic fight scenes, fast moving action, and a classic battle between good guys and bad guys.
(Insert any superhero here)
There have been so many superhero movies over the years that they are hard to count. In general, guys are expected to go see the latest blockbuster that is based on a comic book or long-time cultural hero. This includes Superman (all of them), Spiderman (all of them), Iron Man, Batman (all of them), Watchmen, and many others. In general, these films appeal to the most males who dreamed of being superheros when they were young children.
Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)
Perhaps the LOTR series is a bit too literary for some guys, but the elements are all there and should by partaken at some point. Some of the characters, dialogue, and pace are not exactly macho, but the films do have their share of adrenaline, large-scale special effects, and epic confrontations. The films are long (particularly the extended versions) but well worth the effort.
Star Wars (Six films)
The epic double-trilogy Star Wars is a part of film lore and really everyone should see them at some point, not just guys. Granted, Luke Skywalker is a little whiny at times, but nothing says guy film like Jedi Masters running around with laser swords. In addition, Han Solo is probably the character that guys relate to the most, as he portrays the swashbuckling hero who shoots off his mouth and his gun whenever he wants.
