The Kashmir cat is a fairly new breed of Persian. Its coloring is rather unusual being either chocolate or lilac. They are a fairly large cat weighing in between nine and twelve pounds. Due to its long and lustrous fur however, it will look to weigh much more. The body and legs of a Kashmir is short and stocky and it has a medium length tail. Like other Persians it has the short nose, the face sometimes described as have a squashed in appearance. The eyes of the Kashmir are large and round and the color of the eyes will reflect the color of their coat. Its ears are small and rest on a gently rounded head.
One word that describes the feel of this cat is plush. Its coat is comprised of a thick outer coat with a very dense under coat. It's this very combination that gives the feeling of sinking your fingers into a deep pillow. The long thick fur will require a lot of grooming with a good metal comb to keep it from forming mats or feeling cottony and looking at its best. Also frequent grooming will be needed to help prevent fur balls. You should also give the cat hair ball treatment three to four times a week between meals to help prevent this.
This is a cat who should always be an indoor cat. The fur is just not suited to outside hazards such as twigs, leaves, tall weeds or thorns. Bathing may be required from time to time and this being the case, it is best to start when they are kittens so they can become used it. Dunking a full grown cat in water for the very first time is not recommended for any one. Unless of course, you like being scratched by a raging, soggy, and angry cat.
While the large eyes of the Kashmir are beautiful, like most Persians, they tend to have improperly formed tear ducts which can cause discharge to occur. They can also be susceptible to respiratory diseases due to their very short noses.
The Kashmir is a sweet tempered fairly quiet cat. It doesn't go in for much jumping and leaping about and is well suited to living in an apartment. It is a very affectionate cat that loves its strokes and cuddles and adapts well to most situations. However, it is not very fond of loud, boisterous children, although given time, love and space, it can adjust to the situation.
This is quiet cat can be demanding from time to time and will sing out for your attention or will let you know if you're late for feeding time. Fortunately their voices are fairly quiet without the sharp and grating pitch that some cats have.
So, if you're looking for a sweet tempered, fairly placid and intelligent cat and you don't mind grooming it every day, the Kashmir is a beautiful cat that just might fit the bill.
