Installing a controller to use with an emulator on your PC

So you have gotten that emulator installed on your computer, but you don't like using the keyboard to play the video game? With the wonderful world of USB controllers, your frustration using keyboards will quickly become a thing of the past.

First of all, you need to figure out what you want. Most controllers, such as the ones that are sold at Walmart, break within a few weeks. This can be desirable if you only have ten bucks or so to spare. Most of the time when it breaks, you can just take the controller back to the store you bought it from and get it replaced for free without too much of a problem. If you want to forgo the hassle and buy a controller that will last a long time, buy and Xbox360 controller for 25 to 40 dollars.

After you buy the controller and take it home, take it out of the package and plug it into the computer. If you bought one of the cheap controllers, it should register that you have plugged it in in the bottom right corner of the screen. If you bought the Xbox360 controller go to the Microsoft page or just search "Xbox 360: How to connect an Xbox 360 Controller for Windows to a computer" on Google and download the plugin towards the middle of the page. Follow the instrustions throughout the installation, and if you did it right, a message will appear on the bottom right corner of the screen telling you that you have plugged in the controller successfully.

Now go to you emulator and select joystick configuration under input. It differs depending on the emulator, but the concept is the same. If you did it correctly, you should be able to play all the games you want without using the keyboard!
