Travel with kids to the Black Hills in South Dakota

Most famous for being the home to Mount Rushmore, Black Hills, South Dakota is vacation destination packed with fun for the entire family. With everything from outdoor adventures and parks to shopping and amusement places, every member of the family can enjoy a well-planned trip to the Black Hills area. Families with children can participate in a variety of activities, forge trails and paths through protected pine forests, or simply enjoy the rich heritage and history of the area. In the Black Hills region of South Dakota, mom, dad, grandparents and children can enjoy their trip through by discovering the natural offerings in the wilderness, participation in regional events and fairs, and visiting one of the many cultural or amusement parks in the surrounding area.

OUTDOOR DISCOVERY

Mount Rushmore National Memorial: Millions of tourists visit this huge granite memorial depicting four presidents of the United States of America every year. It is one of the most patriot places in America, and is free to enter. While there, be sure to stop by the visitors center and museum to learn more about the structure and the region, as well as shop for souveniers. Children aged 5-12 can complete the Junior Ranger Activities, Children younger than 5 can become a "Junior Ranger Trainee", too. There are no lodging facilities or camping on the premises. Black Hills National Forest: Visit the pine tree covered forests that rise up on massive hills from the prairies of South Dakota. Considered a very sacred ground to the Lakota Indians, Black Hills pioneer settlers flocked to the region because of the prospect of gold in the region. Families can explore geological formations, streams, wildlife and caves. Camping is available onsite as well as trails to hike, bike, ski, and enjoy horseback riding. The park is free to the public, but camping and some amenities may charge. Rock hounding is permitted in some areas of the park. Cave Tours: If the little ones in tote are on the adventurous side, try your hand at cave exploration. Cave tours of the magnificent and rare crystal calcite caves are available all year long, and offer lighted paths, railings and walkways for the family to feel comfortable.
