The music business is all about image. All about how you look. The public perception is that in order to sing. You must look a certain way. Would Beyonce get the same love from the public if she looked like Monique?
Don't get me wrong about Monique, Monique is beautiful and confident. She knows she looks good. But most important, Monique knows she is somebody in a world full of Beyonce's. To survive in the music business you must believe that you are somebody before you become somebody. As an artist, you must already believe that you are a superstar, not a struggling singer.
You are competing with millions of rising stars who are looking to jump in line, right in front of you. In the music game you want to be confident but not arrogant. You want to be humble but not shy. You want to walk around like everyone needs you and your music, not that you need everyone to like your music.
When Prince stepped to Warner Bros early in his career. His terms was I want to produce my own album. That was unheard in the music business. An unknown artist with no hits producing his own project.. Warner Bros didnt want to go with it. But Prince knew he was a bad motherF* amd that was his deal. Are you that confident? By the way, Prince did completely produce his first album and as they say.... the rest is history.
As a music coach. I coach artists, models, DJ's and actors about the art of personal development. In this business, 1% doubt and you are out. You cant go into this business wondering if you are good enough.
A tip I give a lot of my clients is to read the book called The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. Every little thing you do today,is about building your music career for the future. You cant see it right now but you know its coming. You have to believe that it's coming.
Here is an excercise; When you are walking down the street today, imagine everyone that is walking past you is turning around and saying to themselves. "that's the artist that sings that song!"
Act like you already made it and the chances are....you already have!
