History of the Philadelphia Eagles

by Robert Steadman

Created on: March 09, 2009

Before the Super Bowl was born, the Philadelphia Eagles won three N.F.L. Championships. The Eagles has been in two Super Bowls and losing both of them. In 1980 the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders, in 2004 the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots. Three N.F.L. Championships they won was in 1948,1949, 1960. In their history they had seven Stadiums. They played at the Baker Bowl from 1933-1935. From 1936-1939 the Eagles played at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium. In 1940 they played at Connie Mack Stadium. In 1941 they went back to Philadelphia Municipal Stadium. Then from 1942-1957 they went back to Connie Mack Stadium. From 1958-1970 they played at Franklin Field. Then from 1971-2002 they Played at Veterans Stadium. Then from 2003 till now they play at Lincoln Financial Stadium.

In 1943 during World War II some of the N.F.L. players went to war. Pittsburg Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles did not have enough players to make a full team. Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburg Steelers join teams. In 1943 they were called the Steagles. This was not a permanent merger. At the end of the 1943 season the both teams got all their players.

In the late 80's and late 90's the Eagles were on the rise with the hiring of Buddy Ryan the Defensive Coach of the Super Bowl XX Champions Chicago Bears. Buddy made the Eagle Defense Stronger, and nick named the defense "Gang Green". Buddy brought in players like Seth Joyner, Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Wes Hopkins, Mike Golic, Byron Evans, and Andre Waters. The Eagels did have a strong defense at the time. Buddy Ryan toughen up the Offense they drafted Chris Carter from Ohio State, they had Randle Cunningham at quarterback, They sign a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys Hercell Walker. All that changed in a short time, Chris Carter turned out to be a bust for the Eageles, Chris got in trouble with drugs, He was always late for pratice. Buddy Ryan traded Chris Carter to the Minnesota Vikings. After the 1996 Season Buddy Ryan was fired, and never coached in the N.F.L. again.

Coach Kotite took over the Eagels, three Stright seasons they went back to the play-offs. after losing early in the play-offs Kotite got fired. Then Andy Ried took over. He drafted a young quarterback Donovan Mcnabb. With Andy taken the head coaching job, he took the Eagels back on top. They made the play-offs every year. going to N.F.C champions three times. Andy took the Eagles to the Super Bowl once and lost.

The Eagles this past season lost to the Arizona Cardinals in the N.F.C Championship. The eagles are becoming a strong team. They will win a Super Bowl before Andy Ried retires from the Eagles. They are a team look out for. I think that this coming season they will go to the Super Bowl. I would love to see them win their first Super Bowl in team history. They are loved by the fans in Philadelphia. Good Luck Philadelphia Eagles.
