If you are lucky enough to have an air cleaner that removes most, if not all, of the dust that floats within the air within your home, chances are you won't need to remove the cover of your desktop computer and remove the dust from inside the machine.
Then again, removing the dust from the electronic components that are contained within the case of my computer is something that I do at least once every six months. I usually find a blanket of dust on everything inside of the machine, including the cooling fans and the case openings that allow air to enter and escape from the interior and also from the wires.
You see, that blanket of dust causes, or can cause your computer to run hotter than it was intended to function. Ergo, a clean computer will run longer, cooler and better than a dirty computer. Yes, and with the price of such computers as expensive as they are, I want to keep my computer going without costly repairs or replacement for as long as I can. Then, there is also the possibility that if your computer breaks down you can lose data that might be gone forever, just becauce your computer overheated as a result of being loaded with dust.
So, when you do decide to clean the interior of your computer it is wise to first read the instruction manual that you most likely received with the machine. My manual tells me how to open the case and what components to clean and it also tells me how to clean those components.
I was advised to purchase a can of compressed air cleaner which I should then use to blow the dust off the interior surfaces within the case. That I do and the result is outstanding for removing such accumulated dust and other foreign matter from the electronic components.
Need I say that my computer is one of the coolest machines that I ever owned, in many more ways than one? Yes, and I intend to keep it that way because it is also the most expensive electronic machine that I have ever owned.
If you haven't already guessed, that compressed air serves as an excellent cleaner of your keyboard, as well as your monitor, printer and the other external components that are connected to your computer. Then again, it is truly important that before you clean any kind of electronic devise you must first receive the proper instruction of how to accomplish that task. If that information is not contained within the owners' manual, my advice is to first contact the manufacturer.
