It is very difficult to say whether Stephen Curry, who is only a junior in college, will be the next Reggie Miller, who is one of the best shooters in NBA history. It is clear that Curry is a great shooter and that is playing style reflects that of Reggie Miller. With that said, I do not think Stephen Curry will be the next Reggie Miller.
The main question surrounding Curry is will he be able to create his own shot in the NBA. At 6'3" he has good height for a shooting guard, but his slight, 185 pound frame, makes him susceptible to injury. In the NBA, he will have to consistently run his defenders through screens, and other defensive players will attempt to bump him as he maneuvers his way around the court. Curry will have to add some muscle to his slight frame is he wants to have durability in the NBA.
The main difference between Reggie Miller and Stephen Curry is their size. At 6'7", Miller could easily shoot over other guards who were defending him. Miller also had a slight frame of only 195 lbs. which did not prove to hinder him. Curry could find it a little more difficult to shoot over players at 6'3"meaning he might not be able to get the high quality looks Reggie Miller could.
Another aspect of the NBA game Stephen Curry will need to adjust to is the distance of the 3-point line. In college, the 3-point line is only 20.75 feet from the basket, but in the NBA it is 23.75 feet from the basket. While Curry has proved he has the range to effectively shoot from the NBA distance, it has yet to be seen if he can shoot with the same consistency. One resource Curry has that other players don't is his father Dell, who has a deadly NBA 3-point shooter. His father should be able to help tutor him on how he needs to adjust his game to be and effective NBA player.
One of the biggest similarities between Reggie Miller and Stephen Curry is the quick release they both have on their shot. Miller's release along with his height gave him a huge advantage. Curry has just as quick of a release, if not quicker, which should allow him to make up for any shortfalls in his size. However, comparing Stephen Curry to Reggie Miller is a big step, a step that I'm not willing to take. While I believe Curry will be an effective NBA player, I see him as more of a Steve Kerr type player than Reggie Miller. I don't believe that Curry will be able to score at the rate and consistency he is used to in college which may cause him to force shorts in the NBA. If he realizes his own limitations and doesn't try to be something he's not then he could evolve into a great player. If people start comparing him to players like Reggie Miller then that will put increased pressure on him, pressure he doesn't need. If he can be as good a player as his father was, he would be a success.
