Improving your English

The most effective way to improve your English is to simply learn another language.

This is by far the quickest way I've learned the complicated rules of my first language. Without learning the difference between a noun, verb, and adjective in English, you'll be completely lost in another language!

Instructors always speak in "grammatical lingo" to explain a foreign language's sentence structure. Prior to studying Spanish, German, and Thai I struggled in the ways of English usage. But now I seem to understand my own language even greater after tackling a second language.

In addition, it's important to pay attention to grammar checkers in word processing programs. Often it will identify incomplete sentences, run-on sentences, and slang. This tool can help improve a person's written English and spoken English as well.

And above all else, read. Reading literature, newspapers, and (sometimes) magazines will help to vastly improve a person's vocabulary. With the advent of visual media based entertainment, a vast majority of people have moved away from reading for pleasure. If a person simply read regularly, he/she would also find an increase in their written and spoken English.
