Starting seeds indoors is a gardening rite of passage. There are many really great companies from which to buy seeds. Many of these companies specialize in different things; some carry flowers, others vegetables or herbs. By going the seed starting route, it is possible for a gardener to grow things that may not be available at most retailers.
Necessary Elements
Seeds need light, warmth and moisture to germinate. The best way to ensure that seeds will germinate successfully, and that the germination rate will be high is to provide all of these necessary elements, and they must be provided continuously.
Lighting
Shop lights offer an inexpensive and efficient way to provide the seedlings with light and warmth. By combining an equal number of cool and warm fluorescent light tubes in each shop light, it is possible to provide seeds with a full spectrum of light. The best way to maintain moisture consistently is by starting seeds in some sort of seed starting greenhouse. It can be a store bought kit, or you can make your own out of recycled materials you have on hand.
Starter Units and Greenhouses
Recycle with things you already have
Milk jugs can be turned into a self contained greenhouse unit in which to start seeds. Clear plastic produce or bakery containers can also be turned into greenhouse starter units. Poking holes in the bottom of the containers will make drainage possible. Starter pots can be made out of newspaper.
Environmentally friendly products
Other Eco-friendly methods for starting seeds involve using peat pellets. The pellets expand when soaked in water. The pellet is a self contained unit consisting of planting medium and pot all in one. When the seedlings are mature enough to plant, the whole unit can be planted. Peat pots function in a similar fashion, but it is necessary to fill the peat pots with a planting mix.
A greenhouse unit
Seeds can be started in any type of tray that can be covered. If the seed starting containers don't have a lid, a piece of clear plastic can be placed over the container. To create a tent that will give the seedlings room to grow, use anything available - plastic utensils, Popsicle sticks, slats from broken mini-blinds, straws or anything that is available.
Secure the plastic around the container by taping it, using a rubber-band, a ponytail holder or anything that will seal the container. Poke holes in the plastic or in the top of any type of plastic lid. Air flow is essential to prevent "damping off"
