If your child needs help with English, you need to recognize it right away, as English is one of the most important subjects they will study. As a parent, it is your duty to keep up with your child's progress in school as it will affect their future in every way. Proficiency in the English language is just part of the school curriculum that you will want to keep a careful eye on to make sure your child is doing well.

Education is perhaps the most important thing we can give our children. Most parents do not need to be convinced of this. However, how many parents actually take the time to sit down with their children and help them with their English studies? Are you one of those parents who are too busy or too tired to take the time to help your child? If you are, please note that it is critical that you do this.

If your child is having difficulty with the basics of English, it's apparent that they need help over and above that which they are getting in school.

Following are some hints to help them in their quest to read and write more effectively.

Read to your child and make them read to you.

If you can read, you can learn anything. By reading with your child, you will to be able to keep an eye on your child's progress in English class. When you pinpoint problems, if you don't know how to help them, you should contact their teacher and work out a plan for improvement and stick to it.

Make your child get a library card and use it weekly.

If it means giving up time on the computer or being on a sports team at school, so be it. The library should be an important part of their life. They cannot only check out all kinds of books and other materials, but they can learn how to do research and obtain help from library assistants.

Quiz them on spelling words.

Teach them to be a good speller. Review vocabulary words and help them with spelling and meanings. Go over problem words with them until they are no longer a problem.

Encourage your child to write.

Give your child a journal as a gift and tell them to write in it every day. It can be their private property that you don't have access to, but make sure they are using it and not just tossing it into a corner.

Cut down on your child's TV viewing time.

TV is a big time waster. Many children watch several hours of TV a day, in addition to time on the computer. Curtail their viewing time and make sure they are using the computer in educational ways, not only for entertainment.

If all of the above fail, you can always advertise for a private tutor to come to your home and work with your child once or twice a week until their English skills improve.

All of these ideas will help your child develop their English skills, which they will use throughout their lifetime. As much as they may complain now, they will be grateful to you in the future.
