Comparing Facebook and Myspace

by Cameron Little

Created on: March 08, 2009

Generally, there is no "better" social networking site.

Sites like MySpace and Facebook are top notch, and each one varies entirely to the next. Facebook is much more recent and cutting edge as to providing users with ideas, and MySpace has certainly fallen victim to being a copy cat. Example: Statuses. Facebook had it first, viewing historical statuses and typing it in the "is" format. MySpace then went ahead and copied, of course. Myspacers aren't used to this feature and it's doubtful anyone really cares to use it. I know I don't.

MySpace has fallen Yahoo! to Google. Once at the top, its popularity fails to new technology. They try new attempts at user support, like the MySpace co-branded credit card, which is stupid. Basically when you use it you're saying, "I'm an adult and I use a kid's site to meet people online, YEAH!"

The profile personalization was cool, but now it seems like more and more people are going for simpler looks. People have to scour internet search engines on how to block certain things from showing up, which should just be an option in the first place. It's all really useless and futile nowadays, and more and more people are realizing this. Facebook users enjoy the simplicity and ease of use of the site. The mobile is great, being able to function without being on a computer. Nothing is cluttered, and there is minimal advertising.

Really, most people actually have an account on both sites. I know I do. However, Facebook is much more social. In fact, my Junior prom is actually hosted as an event on Facebook, inviting all members within the Milford High School network. It has updates and information on the event, and it's really cool actually. MySpace could never do something like that, for it already has a negative opinion by everyone. It's blocked on all school computers and known as a place for things school administrators wouldn't approve of.

It's understandable that Facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends and family for years past high school and college, but is it possibly too personal? It asks users for information that most parents wouldn't approve of to be online. MySpace is the same, but if you put false information, it doesn't limit your networks or disable you from certain groups. You can lie, and still keep in touch, without revealing information such as PHONE NUMBERS. That is simply begging for someone to cry at the police. There has been countless reports of such actions on MySpace, but in retrospect, it is the open information displayed hat leads to such accusations. These optional fields can avoid encounters that have a chance to be fatal. Facebook however, with one click on the "add friend" button displays these fields as though it were meant for the world.

Although there really is no "better" site, there certainly is a more favorable one. It's up to the user to decide which they feel more comfortable with, really.
