Poetry: Good-bye

Dearest Dan,
I know that I should talk to you as though
you are still here..
with cheer in my voice, like I always did...
Because you have never really left here
you have only entered a new place..
But, I miss you..

If only I had one more day
or even one hour with you now,
I know what I'd like to say..
That I admire you
for being who you are,
no matter what others may say.

I respect you
for always putting family first,
a top priority..
I'd like to tell you that
I loved you dearly
because you were always
a very caring person,
and always treated me with the
utmost respect,
as you did with all those you knew..

I wonder, if you know
how many people you have touched.
How many lives you enriched,
how many you helped...

Some say you were
"a janitor"
I say you were
much more..
You were a wonderful man,
with charm, and wit,
you were smarter
than most gave you credit for.

Always standing your ground.
loving your Country,
putting family first.

I have learned so much from you,
and I still am in a way..
Your voice, your face
visits me often..
I remember what you'd always say
"hey, you never know".
To always be prepared.
To always lend a helping hand.
To always be respectful.
To always keep your wits about you..
Not to wait, to enjoy life now...

Dan, if only you could see the family now..
You are a grandfather again,
a little boy, Noah.. he's so cute!
Beaner has grown up so much
and has been through hell,
but as she has learned from you,
she toughed it out!

Jeremy is a handsome young man,
he misses you so.
If only you could tell him again,
how much you loved him,
and how proud you are of him..
He is needing you so..
I know you'd like for him,
to get his education,
and perhaps join the Army too..
But, I think he's lost his way,
his goal for the future...
So please, remind him again..

If you only could see Carol now,
she's still hurting, and still has a
emptiness inside that only you could fill.
Strong willed, and strong natured,
she is hiding it well..
If only you could see her driving now!
I just know you'd be proud,
and love to pick on her too!
Just like the old days..
So if you could, just remind her
that you are always around for her,
even now..

If only you could see the boys and Rachel too
they miss you a lot,
though young, they understand it was
a tragic event that took you away from us..
Rachel looks to the sky for you
and says "Uncle Dan is watching Mommy"
I smile and let her know you really are,
and together we blow a kiss to you,
and smile with memories in our heads..

The boys, they look through Army pictures,
sometimes in school, and they think of you,
and how cool it was to have an Uncle that
was in the Army..
The boys wonder, what you would do
had you been here on 9-11-01...

So Dan, one more thing if you could,
tonight as I kiss my childen
and tuck them in tight,
visit them in their dreams
let them know you are still here
even though they can't see you,
and that you love them still..

Oh Dan, we do miss you so.
The whole family does..
Sometimes out of selfishness,
I wish I could bring you back
to bring our lives back to peacefulness,
to what it once was like..
We all seemed to have drifted apart..
it was like you were the rock we all clung to..

I will forever be grateful though,
for the times we shared,
(those Saturday night card nights with brownies and milk!)
the laughs we shared,
and most of all,
the memories....

Rest in the peaceful arms of the angels, Dan.
Feel secure knowing you were deeply loved & adored..
We love you, and miss you much.
