The zodiac consists of twelve signs. Most people are familiar with how the Sun moves through the zodiac in one year. In March, the Sun enters Aries, and at about one month intervals, then travels through Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and then to Aries again at the beginning of a new cycle. Due to astronomical reasons, the earth also goes through a precession that lasts about 26,000 years, which is a 'Great Year,' and this Great Year can be divided into ages which also correspond to each sign of the zodiac.
Each great age lasts about 2,160 years. At the moment, we are in or close to the Age of Aquarius. Some astrologers believe that the Age of Aquarius has already started, and some believe that it has not started yet. Most would at least admit that we're experiencing activity on earth that suggests we are 'on the cusp' of the Age of Aquarius.
Human beings adapt and adjust to the times. The Age of Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, is, or will be, about technological advances, communication, unexpected events (good or bad), humanitarianism, and the rise of the common man. The Piscean Age, which precedes the Aquarian Age (the Great Year's ages move backwards, so Pisces transitions to Aquarius, Aquarius to Capricorn, and so on), is about struggle and sacrifice, with a very emotional and religious theme. Pisces is ruled by Neptune. Neptune is cold and watery, and is characterized by a dreamy aspect which can quickly become delusional.
The symbol for Christ and Christianity is a fish. That is not something somebody simply made up. It's directly associated with Christ as the messiah near the beginning of the Piscean Age - and Pisces' symbol is two fish connected to each other. During the Age of Aries, the ram was a symbol of the times, and before that, in the Age of Taurus, the symbol of the times was a bull. Of course, Aries' symbol is the ram and Taurus' symbol is the bull.
The dates of the ages are approximate and many experts disagree. An astronomer would simply point to the sky and say that the proper calculations show the age we're in. Astrologers and psychics would each have their own opinions about the ages and the dates. That said, the ages are characterized by the signs that rule a given age.
So the Age of Aquarius, as was mentioned, will have a great deal of technological development, communication, a movement towards more democracy (probably utilizing technology to do so as well), and more friendship and common bonds between nations. We are already starting to see a lot of the Aquarius energy manifest in this fashion.
The Age of Capricorn, which will follow the Age of Aquarius in approximately 4200 AD, will doubtlessly utilize the inventions and ideas of the Aquarian Age to their absolute limits. Saturn rules Capricorn, so a lot of the Age of Capricorn will be reigning in the wild ideas and unexpected events that occured during the Aquarian Age and using them to humans' benefit.
The Age of Sagittarius, beginning in approximately 6400 AD, will be a time of using the discipline and utilitarianism of the Age of Capricorn to explore the universe and push the limits of what the human mind can comprehend. It will also likely be a time of abundance, and perhaps, many excesses, due to the influential ruling planet being Jupiter.
One can also look back in history and associate the signs of each great age and their ruling planets to the trends and actions that the human race experienced. The great ages are always occuring and are symbolic of the trials and triumphs of humans, past, present, and future.
