A dream job in my opinion should not be mistaken for a job which is within ones grasp and is potentially possible. A dream job should refer to a career path which contains the perfect job meant for you, but which is not within reach.
My dream job therefore is one which will never become a reality for me. The career path of teaching is my dream job. Now readers may be confused; for of course teaching is a possible career choice. However there is teaching and teaching. I have no wish to remain within the educational system of today. After almost two decades within the system as a student I cannot wait to leave and certainly has no intention of returning as a teacher.
My parents have often said that I am not a modern girl, that I would have fitted in well in past generations. For I have a passion and an idea of teaching which is outdated and has no place within the current system of today. I would have loved to have been a teacher, teaching my father's generation, in the 1960's. My role model is in fact my father's village primary school teacher, and also the Miss Read series, revolving around a village, and school. This would have been my dream job.
I am a firm believer that teaching should be focused on the children's education. Today unfortunately the children's education is not a primary focus; government red tape, forms, regulations, and political correctness dominates lessons. Tests, exams and more tests are the aim, and discipline is a problem, taking the focus away from the education. A friend going through teacher's training holds similar ideals to me. She is often discouraged and disheartened for her classes are spent disciplining children, not teaching, and the attention paid to her inadequate. And this is at GCSE level. That is I am afraid a common picture within the system and it sounds like a stressful job. Teachers are not paid enough.
The teaching world which I dream to be a part of is either diminishing or has disappeared. The teacher ruled unconditionally, they answered to no one, and were free to teach without government interference. The subjects for little ones focused on the three R's, and not until they had been conquered, were other subjects such as history and geography introduced. My father said that everyone left primary school knowing at the very least basic maths, the structure of language and could read. Everyone, even those who were considered less bright could achieve these goals. Many children today leave primary school sadly deficient
