The future of the Liverpool soccer team

The future of Liverpool Football Club

Liverpool FC, a team rich in history and successes. Formed in 1892, the English club has achieved success few other teams can match. 18 times League Champions. Won the FA Cup and League Cup seven times each.

In Europe, Liverpool have won the European Cup, now the Champions League, 5 times, most recently in 2005. They have also won the UEFA Cup three times in their illustrious history.

However, when we consider the future of Liverpool FC, one goal quickly comes to mind becoming League Champions for a record 19th time. This is a very significant goal as the last time Liverpool were champions, was in 1990.

Nineteen years. That's how long Liverpool fans like me have been waiting for that elusive 19th League Championship title. The great Kenny Dalglish was the last manager to win the championship. Since then, Graeme Souness, Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier have come and gone, and still no league title. Rafa Benitez is the latest manager given the responsibility of ending the 19-year drought.

Having survived the tragedies of Heysel in 1985 and Hillsborough in 1989, the closest thing to another tragedy is the failure to lift the league title. Although Gerard Houllier led Liverpool to a historic treble in 2001, it was not enough to satisfy the Kop fans' hunger for league success.

While no Liverpool fan will ever forget the Champions League Final in Istanbul in 2005, when the team came back from a first-half 3-0 deficit against AC Milan to win the Cup in a penalty shootout, many look to the day Liverpool ends the season on top of the Premier League.

No one can blame Liverpool fans for aspiring to be the best in England again. Being second has never been acceptable in the old glory years. Here's what some of Liverpool's legendary managers have said in the past.

The one and only, Bill Shankly (1959 - 1974) once said, "If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing."

"Bob Paisley (1974 - 1983), his successor quipped, "Mind you, I've been here during the bad times too - one year we came second."

"At Liverpool we never accept second best." Kenny Dalglish (1985 - 1991)

Fast forward to the present. It's March 2009. Seven months ago Liverpool began another quest for their "Holy Grail" under master tactician, Rafa Benitez, the ever-influential Steven Gerrard and the prolific marksman, Fernando Torres.

Considering the pre-season transfer drama, in which Rafa failed to acquire the services of Gareth Barry and instead brought in Robbie
