Sexual dysfunction: Symptoms and causes

pressure and blood is released from the sex organs and other parts of the body which had earlier become swollen and full. The erection disappears and the penis returns to its usual size, and the vaginal area begins to dry as it too, returns to its prearoused state. At this point, a male will not be capable of sex for a period of time because his erection has subsided. He can become aroused again and ready for a sexual encounter, but the time frame will depend greatly on the health and age of the male. Whereas an adolescent may be ready for sex again within minutes, a middle aged or older man typically needs more time for a repeat encounter. This period of rest is known as the refractory period. This refractory period is not experienced by woman, so with gentle stimulation of her sensitive areas, a woman can be ready for sex again within a few minutes, and is therefore capable of experiencing multiple orgasms.

At certain times during the life of both male and females and depending on their psychological and physical health, some may experience differing levels of sexual dysfunction. These problems may with the arousal or response, and in females it can often be associated with menopause. From a physical point of view, arousal and response is not greatly affected, although some vaginal dryness can make her sexual experiences uncomfortable. Of course, this can be cured by simply using a manufactured lubricant prior to intercourse. Males and females can both experience a loss of libido at various times during their lives; these problems are known as female sexual arousal disorder and male erectile disorder, or collectively, hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Recognizing symptoms of these disorders is important, because any continuation of either will require therapy to reveal any underlying issues which need resolving. Orgasmic disorder and premature ejaculation are some other common problems which both male and females encounter. After excluding any physical problems, sex therapy, self-exploration or mutual stimulation may be necessary to overcome any persistent or recurring incidences.

Orgasmic disorder can also occur during and after menopause when a woman's hormone levels are lower. Women can experience psychological issues during menopause, and quite often they become depressed and feel a sense of grief at not being able to have any more children. Likewise, a man can also experience depression due to lower testosterone levels. This loss of sexual appetite happens
