What to do when your computer suddenly freezes

Unfortunately this is the most common thing in the computer world. If you are using Windows XP you might get one Freeze per day and that's more than enough to stress you out. If you are using Windows Vista is very likely you will get a freeze every hour specially if you are not using enough RAM for it. This happens because of the way operating systems were made. They are so complex that they are full of bugs and other complicated stuff that I will not explain here.

What you really need to know is what you can do about it.

The first thing you must do when the computer freezes is to press CTRL + ALT + DEL. This is the combination to open the task manager and to force Windows to stop the application that is currently making your computer work very bad. Just go to the Processes tab and then see which one is using the most CPU. Unless you are coding video or even transcoding some audio, it's very likely an application to use that much CPU power like +90% so close that thing immediately! Most of the times it's an external program that is doing such thing. However it can happen that Windows Explorer which is the thing that makes you able to use your computer graphical environment, crash from time to times. In this case once you close the Explorer you will have to click on Run and then type Explorer to open it again. This is much like a computer reboot, just a fast version with almost the same benefits.

Another reason why your computer might freeze it's because it lacks RAM and hard disk space. The best way to fix this is to double the amount of RAM it currently has. RAM is very cheap these days, specially if you go to a local store. They are cutting on prices so they can compete with the largest stores. Also you should consider to buy a big hard disk if the one you currently have is not big enough for you.

Finally the reason why your computer might crash is when you are surfing the internet. The cache might be overflowing with too much information and also you have not enough space in the RAM memory To fix this you must clear all the data in the cache and other personal data and then you must close and open again the browser. This thing should also be able to make your browser faster since it does not waste precious time looking to see if there is a new updated page on the server. It will download it anyway so this will speed up the process. You should consider Firefox.
