Poetry: Overcoming challenges

by Karen Gilbert

Created on: March 07, 2009

All I ever wanted was to be in the game, to play,

To have you choose me from the bench; I waited each day.

I listened to your pep talks and practiced when need be,

I sat upon that bench and waited; strike one, strike two, strike three.

Next inning was your mantra; tomorrow you're the one.

My season came and went and then my contract was done.

You recruited younger players- spring, summer and fall

While I drifted towards the months of winter, carrying water, bats and balls.

I would have played the outfield; I would have played in pain.

Wasn't I at every practice in sunshine and in rain?

Cheered when we were losing, cheered even louder when we won,

I was always a team player, though I never was a chosen one
