All I ever wanted was to be in the game, to play,
To have you choose me from the bench; I waited each day.
I listened to your pep talks and practiced when need be,
I sat upon that bench and waited; strike one, strike two, strike three.
Next inning was your mantra; tomorrow you're the one.
My season came and went and then my contract was done.
You recruited younger players- spring, summer and fall
While I drifted towards the months of winter, carrying water, bats and balls.
I would have played the outfield; I would have played in pain.
Wasn't I at every practice in sunshine and in rain?
Cheered when we were losing, cheered even louder when we won,
I was always a team player, though I never was a chosen one
