The Chicago White Sox franchise history

by Robert Steadman

Created on: March 07, 2009

The Chicago White Sox used to be called the White Stockings back in 1901, when they first came in the major leagues. 1917 was their best season they ever had. The White Sox added new guys on the team. They added Chick Gandil, Lefty Williams, Swede Risberg at second, moving Weaver to third base. The Chicago White Sox would beat the New York Giants in the 1917 World Series in six games. In 1917, The White Sox had their best ever win-loss record 100-54, till this day that is still a franchise record.

In 1919, the unthinkable happened. The White Sox would breeze through the 1919 season, winning 88 games of the season. Even though the Cincinnati Redlegs won 96 games of their season, The White Sox were heavily Favorites to win the 1919 World Series. Chick Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Swede Risberg, Happy Felch, Joe Jackson, George Weaver, Eddie Collins, were all part of the Scandal. Even though Joe Jackson and George Weaver never gotten paid to throw the World Series. Only thing that these two guys did wrong was they never told Kid Gleason or Charles Comisky about the fix.

After the 1919 World Series, the Chicago White Sox was never the same. They lost a lot fans going to the ballpark. It took the White Sox nearly 40 years to go back to the World Series, and lose to the L.A. Dodgers. Everyone thought that the White Sox had a Black Sox course for what happened in 1919. From 1959 through 2004 they never won another World Series.

In 2005, The White Sox would win 99 games that season. The White Sox would have the best record in the American League. This would be their best season since 1917. It took the Chicago White Sox 88 years to finally break the course and win the World Series against the Houston Astros in a 4 game Sweep. The White Sox finally got their fans back since that Scandal. Counting this World Series win they have won 3 World Series in their history.

In 2006 and 2007, the White Sox would miss the play-offs. This time they can't blame the course. They would go back to the play-offs and lose in A.L.D.S against the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 in the Series. I think they are team to watch out for. I think they will win their fourth World Series soon. I think they will be the team to beat this coming season. I would not be surprised if they win it all this season.

I think for what happened in 1919 should have never happened. This is why now the players have agents. It's a shame that it happened that way. I feel that the White Sox could have won the 1919 World Series, but no one will ever know that now. I hope that this will never happen again.
