Marketing your business during a recession is not just about finding free or low-cost advertising venues for your products or services. It is also important to position your business in such a way that even during weak financial times people still see it as a must-have item.
How to Market Your Product or Service
When the economy gets tight, so do the purse strings. And while most business people will not frivolously spend advertising dollars even in a good economy, during down times spending wisely becomes more important.
When you market your business, keep in mind that one of the most important concepts is how you position your company so that people see the benefits over the cost. That doesn't give you carte blanche to charge wild prices or fees; however, it does give you a bit more wiggle room when customers begin to look for ways to cut costs. If you can communicate how purchasing your product or service will actually help them save more in the long run, they are more apt to make the investment.
So, for instance, since we're in tax season, income tax services are stressing how utilizing their service will net you more cash back on your return which virtually covers the fee you pay them to prepare your taxes. Plus if there are any errors, they stand behind their work. What could be more enticing?
Where to Market Your Product or Service
Deciding where to market your product or service depends a lot on your target audience; however, since the internet is popular with so many consumers it makes sense to take advantage of this great tool. Here are five ideas.
Use Your Website. Obviously, if you already have a website set up for your business make sure to keep it up-to-date and relevant. If you have yet to develop one, now would be a great time to get started.
Write What You Sell. A great way to market your business is to write and post helpful articles which include your business name and a link. Or become a subject matter expert and allow others to call upon you for insight and quotes for their articles.
Use Your Blog. If your website doesn't have a blog, start one. Or become a guest blogger for an established blog. Make sure to provide a bookmark so fans can connect easily.
Become Sociable. Social websites are hot and your marketing could be too if you find the right connections. Hook up with people at Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn by creating a profile that is all about your business.
Use a Professional Association. One of the best ways to market your business is to network, not just online, but face-to-face. Join a professional association, connect and spread the word by talking to people, handing out business cards and giving presentations.
Keep in mind that the whole idea behind marketing your business during a recession is to do it cost effectively. And you can do that with the right message and the right marketing tools.
