John wore his best black suit. It's the only one he didn't have to get altered lately. He wore a brown shirt and a dark blue tie. He was looking good!
It started innocently enough. John was taken to the conference room by the HR person (HR) and introduced to the director (D), the hiring manager (HM) and another manager (AM). John shook their hands and said "Nice to meet you" to each in their turn.
HR: OK, John. I will come back to escort you out once your interview is over.
John: Thank you.
HR: You're welcome, and good luck.
D: I want to welcome you to this interview. There will be a 4th person joining us as soon as he is available. His name is Cain, and he got detained in some other task for the moment.
John: OK.
D: So, I think that each of us will tell you a little about ourselves, and then it will be your turn to tell us something of your experience.
John: OK.
D: I'll start, I guess. I've been with the company for 10 years now, and I really love it here. I started as a manager in sales, and then 2 years ago, I was promoted and made Director of IT. Heather?
HM: I've worked here for 8 years. I've worked with Dave since he got promoted. He brought me over from HR. Andrew?
AM: Yes, I've also been here for 8 years. Dave brought me over to IT from finance.
D: OK, John, tell us a little about your experience.
John: Yes, thanks for asking me here for the interview. I've been a project manager in IT now for 9 years. Before that, I was a developer and even did some desktop support.
D: Alright, then! We have some standard questions to ask, and then we will ask for clarification as needed. So, my first question is "What is your favorite color and why?"
John: Well, blue, but I don't know why.
D: Interesting. Heather?
HM: Yes. John, how many golf balls does it take to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool?
John: Well, I don't know, but I'm sure I can look it up on Wikipedia if need be.
HM: OK, Andrew?
AM: So, John, at what velocity must a sparrow fly to carry a coconut from the tropics?
John: Um, African or European sparrow?
AM: Hmm, I don't know.
John: Isn't that a question from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"?
AM: Is it now? I wasn't aware of that.
John: Then why OK, never mind.
D: John, so you are applying for project manager. What does a project manager do?
John: Er, well [gathering composure] a project manager oversees projects with the intent of delivering the product within scope, on time and on budget.
D: So THAT'S what a project manager does!
John: You mean you didn't know that?
D: Well,
