Essays: Strangers

by Dominic D.

Created on: March 06, 2009

I watched her as she shopped. I pretended to do so also. This gave me time to study her. It was a chance meeting, and to see her was pure coincidence. She was pretty in a way that others might not notice. Her hair done in a youthful style, although you could see the lines of age creeping up on her face. She moved swift and determined, perhaps in anticipation of preparing a tasteful meal for that certain someone that evening. She was hurried, but not careless. She knew everything that she needed to get, and she didn't want to spend any more time here than necessary.

There was no ring on her wedding hand, and her manner of dress revealed someone who was single. There are things about the way people dress that reveal so much about them. She never once saw me staring at her, and why would she? We were strangers here, but I continued to watch her as I pretended to shop for my own dinner. The faint smell of a familiar perfume drifted my way, and with it the opening up of a memory to a time since gone by. A time when love filled my life, and certain moments of pleasure were never repeated. A time when nothing else mattered but being in her arms, and her, in mine. I tried so hard to forget her smell, and those little secrets, close lovers share, but now, they all came rushing back like a wave loose in the ocean. I still could not keep my eyes off her. She was steel, and I a magnet. But never once did she give me a glance. I seemed almost invisible. Perhaps she was too preoccupied.

It seemed like ages, but it was only a year since those little acts of endearment ended. We pledged our love, as lovers often do. We swore we would be together, forever. All those little moments that create such perfect memories, soon became moments of torture during those late, sleepless nights. We dreamed big, but more important, we dreamed together. Her breath became mine. I was her air. She swore undying love, but I knew it was too big a promise for her to keep. I knew better, but soon I believed all her words. Soon, my love could not be contained. This was the love of my life. The person created for me,...

I watched as she finished her shopping and proceeded to the check out counter. I followed and stood right behind her. She turned around and for a brief second, she allowed our eyes to meet. Without any reaction, she turned back around, and I realized we were nothing but strangers.
