In order to begin to understand why people blog, it is firstly necessary to recognise what blogging was in its earliest inception. It was simply a way for people to create permanent records of their thoughts, actions, or opinions and share them with the wider world at large via the Web. This was in essence a technical form of recording personal information in the way people had done for centuries in diaries or journals.
There are those who blog to this day as a means of keeping records. Blogs in this instance may include such as cooking recipe blogs. Where in times gone by, amateur recipe creators would lovingly add each creation to a bound book in order to record their work, their modern day counterparts can simply add it to a suitable blog and in this way share their recipes with the world, as well as record them for their own future reference and use.
It may be the love of a hobby which causes someone to blog. They may be an extremely keen gardener and wish to share details of their thoughts and horticultural experiences online with those who are like minded. This is an excellent means of sharing tips, advice and information as and when it becomes available.
Many professionals are now also waking up to the concept and benefits of blogging. These bloggers are likely to record details of their achievements in their blog, perhaps conferences which they will be attending or even espouse theories which they have developed relevant to their particular field. This is a way of sharing them with their colleagues or collaborators and obtaining the opinions of people from around the world.
Business owners blog as a way of promoting their business. Blogs can be used to divert traffic to the business website, encourage people to visit a business premises, or even to sell products directly to customers via mail order.
Perhaps most prolifically in present times, there are those people who blog in an attempt to make money from the practice. The problem which such bloggers may face is that unless they do have a passion for their topic, a driving force to help them produce quality posts, their chances of success are limited. An empty blog will simply not make any money at all. Thie means that the blogs which make the most money are likely to also fall in to one of the categories previously mentioned.
