If by peace on earth, we are speaking of every human being at peace with every other human being, this is attainable but unlikely. There is a race between the forces of chaos and the forces of peace. Either peace will finally win out or chaos will bring an end to human life on this planet.
If we are speaking of peace between nations, this is more attainable and does not require that every human love her or his neighbor. Still, this is very difficult to attain and even hard to imagine from the point of view of our current global situation.
Clearly, peace on earth must begin with individuals. It is possible that if enough individuals are able to find peace within, there will be a critical mass. This morphogenetic field (as posited by Rupert Sheldrake) will sweep all of humankind into its embrace and peace will reign.
One of the biggest problems with attaining peace on earth is the primary reason for physical being. From a spiritual point of view, and from the point of view of many world religions, earth life is designed to help us grow spiritually, to correct mistakes in past lives and try to discover the true self, the self intimately connected to the divine.
It follows, then, that many of us have come into this life with challenges already in place. Certainly a life of peace is not much of a challenge. We may start life, even in early childhood, with difficulties to be met, situations seemingly out of our control, that do not lead naturally to personal peace.
Wars are not natural. Human beings start wars as a way of trying to meet their challenges. There are major issues that we all choose to face in any given lifetime. One common issue is that of power. We may have abused power in a past life or we may have been powerless, seemingly a victim.
Although it may seem counterintuitive, those who do not feel powerful are generally the ones who start wars. People who experience personal power have no need to express their power. It is the weak and powerless who start wars. Sadly, attaining to positions of power and even starting wars does not give the powerless any sense of power.
Peace is difficult to come by when there are so many who are here to be challenged by the polarity of peace and war, by the polarity of power and powerlessness. Wars are always about power. There may be an agenda concerning attaining wealth in the form of oil or other natural resources. There may be an agenda concerning acquiring property. With war, as with other endeavors, follow the money, follow
