Magnesium: the Mineral that can save your life and more

While driving into town one day, I was listening to a health radio show and heard Dr. Carolyn Dean speaking on the miracles of magnesium. She is a physician who has studied the best of both worlds and has a M.D. as well as an N.D. degree (Naturopathic Doctor). She was talking about Heart Attacks and Stroke victims. The first thing EMS/doctors administer is a magnesium IV drip; this ups the chances of recovery dramatically. Wow...I was hooked, tell me more; after all I am 57 and need all the help I can get to stay healthy and feel great.

It seems that the body has over 300 Enzymes working full time to keep you healthy and they need magnesium. One example she gave was the Co-Enzyme Q10 which helps prevent heart attacks. The mitochondria cells, where the energy machines work, need magnesium to function normally. It regulates Calcium from flooding into the cells which can cause cell death and spasms. You want Calcium outside of these cells, not inside. This is why drug companies peddle "calcium channel blockers" for heart patients; however, cheap, natural magnesium does the same thing with no toxic side effects. It also detoxifies the body from metals like lead and aluminum. Magnesium stimulates DHEA (a hormone) that affects aging and it helps adrenal stress hormones to stay under control as well as regulating insulin levels that helps diabetics. She went on to discuss how some kinds of cholesterol are needed in the body to make hormones and that the cholesterol lowering Staten drugs kill Q10 which your body needs! Magnesium helps lower cholesterol safely and costs less.

Magnesium deficiency is a major health problem in the US; some reports suggest that 50% to 70% of the diseases reported are treatable by magnesium supplements. Symptoms of muscle spasms, fatigue, migraines, depression (Serotonin which elevates moods is dependent on Mg), hypertension, insomnia, brain "confusion" - can be symptoms of Magnesium deficiency. Most MDs only do a serum blood test for Magnesium deficiency; however, that only tests 1% of your needs. You need a special test called the ionic magnesium test which tests the levels in blood cells (the Exa Test; go to www.exatest.com for information). She also discussed all the Calcium supplements women are taking for bone density and that too much Calcium without Magnesium to balance it out is bad for you. You get muscle spasms and other problems. It is all explained in detail in her book called "The Miracle of Magnesium". I suggest you go to her web site and do further reading; she lists 22 symptoms and benefits from a section in her book. www.carolyndean.com

I know from personal experience that taking Magnesium helped me with my insomnia and migraines and it helped my ADHD son (Magnesium is vital for Brain function and nerves). Go check out her site and book, it can't hurt.....and it just might save your life.
