Maybe it is the way she used to cut the crusts off of your PB&J sandwiches. It could be how she let you cry on her shoulder after your first break up. It might even be because when she looks at you with pride in her eyes, you feel that you can do no wrong. Whatever the reason, if you would like to make your mom feel special this Mother's Day, skip the traditional flowers and brunch. Instead, do something that shows that she is still number one in your life.
Get to know her.
Before you go off and buy her a present for Mother's Day this year, find out what your mother likes. Not as a mom, but as a real person. Look around her house at the music, food, books, TV shows, hobbies, etc. that she enjoys. You can even ask her friends for ideas. A personalized gift basket full of her favorite things shows that you care enough about her to know her likes and dislikes.
Buy a group gift.
If you have siblings, consider going in on a group gift so that you can afford to be more extravagant. Your Mom is beyond counting the number of presents she gets and can appreciate quality over quantity. A weekend cruise, a nice piece of jewelry she has been eyeing, or even an upgrade to a room in her house like wood floors can be within reach if everyone chips in.
Give the gift of time.
Include yourself in the gift. If she is like most Moms, time spent with her always busy son or daughter is a great gift. Taking her out to a brunch or dinner is nice, but even better, buy her tickets to her favorite musical and have a night on the town together. Another idea would be to revisit activities that you used to love doing together when you were younger.
Give from your heart.
Giving from the heart is another way to make your mom feel special. Restoring old photos of her parents and putting them in a nice frame is a touching gift that shows that you care. Gathering the entire family for a photo shoot is also a sweet gift that she will appreciate for years to come.
Surprise her
Surprises can make the best Mother's Day gifts. If you live out of town, fly in to see her unexpectedly. You could also throw a surprise Mothers Day party for her and invite the extended family. You could even surprise her with a weekend away. Have your father pack her bags ahead of time don't tell her where you are going until you get there.
Not all of these gift ideas will work for your mother, but think about the ones that will. Find a way to make her feel special and important in your life. The joy on her face from receiving your gift will be a memory that will last forever.
