The mind body connection is a powerful force. Many people do not realize the impact our minds have on our physical bodies. Much research has gone into studying the effects our minds have on our bodies. Many examples have been given on how our bodies react to our inner thoughts.
All of us at one time or another have had a stressful event. Stress can be good and bad. We can move into a new house, find a new and better job, have a baby or get married. Not all stressful life events are bad events. However, our bodies can react to good stress and bad stress in similar ways.
We may be used to going very fast forward, keeping pace with every day life, and we forget about ourselves. We don't take the time to take care of our own bodies, our own minds and our own health. Taking care of ourselves begins with our emotions. Our emotions are directly tied into our physical bodies.
When people go through a traumatic event, respiratory rates increase, blood pressure goes up and we may not be able to calm our minds; therefore, we will be unable to sleep or get good sleep. When negative things happen to us, we react with emotions. This changes our physical bodies.
Individuals who are dealing with infertility often go through the same emotions as an individual dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. Treatments can be very difficult, downright invasive, and emotionally draining. Your physical body is going through so many changes during treatments. Your emotional health is suffering too.
With every failed cycle of treatment, with every hurdle one must get around in order to reach their goal, stress levels go up and negative energy increases. It is a vicious cycle. The effect of mental health on fertility is great.
However, that being said, it certainly doesn't help to hear other people say, "Just relax, it will happen" or "If you just take that vacation to the Bahamas you've been wanting to take, I bet it will happen" or comments like, "I knew someone who adopted a baby and then they got pregnant". Words can have very harmful effects on the mental health of an individual. It is up to the individual to turn around the negativity in their life, take control of the power of positive thinking and reach their ultimate goal.
Mental health has a powerful effect on fertility. It is often said that when individuals stop trying to do something and let something happen naturally, it can happen easily. Well, with infertility, there are not always those easy avenues. However, mental health is powerful for healing your mind, body and soul.
If your mental health is at it's best, you see the world with all of it's endless possibilities. You see color around you and you see the good in others. If your mental health is at it's worst, chances are you see the world with limited possibilities, in gray and dark hues, and you see everyone around you in a negative light.
Anger and frustration and a feeling of powerlessness is what turns into depression. Depression is a state of being and at some point, all individuals going through a chronic problem will end up in this state at one time or another. Everyone is affected differently and some depression may last longer in some people than others.
Fertility is just one factor in our human existence but it is an important factor. Our mental health dictates how well we feel, how well our immune system is functioning, how much energy we have and how efficiently our bodies run. In order to keep our bodies in tip top shape, we all could use a little emotional "tune up" at one time or another. Keeping our mental focus positive can only bring a more balanced emotional state. A more balanced emotional state will help us achieve our goals.
