Voice over internet protocol (VOIP) is a great way to save money. Using VOIP, mobile phone users can place calls over the internet for free.

Skype is a popular VOIP internet phone service that allows people to place local, national, and international phone calls for free over the internet. Owners of Windows Mobile smartphones and Pocket PCs can download Skype software to their devices and begin placing free Skype-to-Skype VOIP calls over the internet.

How to Download Skype VOIP onto a Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smartphone

1) Before starting the Skype software downloading process, connect the Windows Mobile smartphone or Pocket PC to the computer by USB cable or Bluetooth. If this is done via a PC, make sure Microsoft ActiveSync is running.

2) Point the web browser to http://skype.com/download/skyp e/windowsmobile. The Skype 2.5 for Windows Mobile page displays.

3) In the blue Skype 2.5 for Windows Mobile box, two options display: Download for Pocket PC and Download for Smartphone.

4) If the mobile phone user has a Pocket PC, click the Download via PC button on the left hand side to download Skype from the PC to the Windows Mobile Pocket PC. Directions for downloading via PC or downloading to phone are displayed. Alternatively, click download to Pocket PC in order to download Skype directly from the Windows Mobile Pocket PC.

5) If the mobile phone user has a Windows Mobile smartphone, click the Download via PC button on the right hand side to download Skype from the PC to the Windows Mobile smartphone. Directions for downloading via PC or downloading to mobile phone are displayed. Alternatively, click download to Smartphone in order to download Skype directly from the Windows Mobile smartphone.

Important Considerations Before Downloading Skype VOIP for Windows Mobile

The most important thing to keep in mind before downloading Skype VOIP for Windows Mobile is data usage. Data usage costs apply for using Skype VOIP over 3G mobile networks (EDGE, EV-DO and UMTS). Therefore, Skype recommends an unlimited data plan for the "free" VOIP to be truly free.

Even so, the additional cost of an unlimited data plan could be substantially lower than the mobile phone's monthly bill if the mobile phone user frequently uses his or her texting and minutes. This is where Skype for VOIP Windows Mobile could potentially save the mobile phone user money.
