Running isn't for everyone but for those that are able, the benefits should compel them to take those first steps. Once they do, it is hard to stop.!
Health Benefits
The most obvious reason people should run is for the physical health benefits, chief of which is the calorie burning and consequent weight loss or maintenance involved. While the actual calories burned varies with the weight of the individual and the intensity of the workout, this benefit is definite and desirable. Another factor is the continued increased metabolism over the next 24 hours which will increase the calorie burning capabilities of your body as a result of the running workout.
With heart disease being the number one killer in the United States, running is an excellent way to improve the health of the circulatory system including the heart and blood vessels. Running to the point of maintaining a heart rate of 80% of your max (for more information on determining your target heart rate click here http://www.ehow.com/how_4681491_figure-heart-rate.ht ml) can help flush unwanted byproducts out of your circulatory system as well as make it more efficient overall. A more efficient heart and circulatory system means a healthier and more productive you!
Social - Psychological Benefits
Endorphins are the chemical messengers the body uses to send the message of "pleasure." When released, these hormones become almost addictive by themselves. The bad news is that some people use drugs to mimic and/or cause these hormones to be released. The good news is that a good workout will cause the same hormones to be released thereby producing what some call the "runner's high." After a workout you will feel good about yourself and you will have a more positive outlook on life in general.
Running will also build self-confidence and self-discipline. At times you will not want to spend the extra time and effort to go out and pound the pavement or jump on the treadmill but after you do, you will have conquered yourself. This builds the confidence that you can overcome obstacles and force yourself to go past the point of comfort in order to accomplish a goal. Both of these attributes are extremely valuable in today's society.
Running is easy on the wallet and can open doors to relationships with quality people who share similar interests. Most people can begin running with a pair of sneakers they already own and the sidewalks are free so very little upfront investment is necessary. While running, most people tend to "hook up" with a friend to run with (a good idea for safety sake also) who also has a friend who has a friend... Before you know it, you are talking a whole new language with people you didn't know six months ago.
So why should you run? It's good for you physically, socially, and psychologically. It is an inexpensive way to exercise and has great rewards.
