When I first started at McDonald's, I was a housewife and mother of three autistic children, desperate to leave the house for a few hours a week. I needed a flexible shedule and to be able to actually speak to other adults. Life can be very lonely while taking care of disabled children. It is very difficult to go out in public. I was feeling very isolated form the rest of the world and I knew that I needed to get out by myself during the week without feeling guilty. A part-time job was the perfect answer. Not only would I be helping myself, I would be bringing additional income home.
I went down the road to apply at McDonald's because I knew that they could give me a flexible schedule. My husband works the four o'clock AM shift at ESPN and I knew that I would be hard pressed to find a job that could work around unconventional hours. I also knew that I had a chance to get hired since I had been in the food service industry since age sixteen. I also had management experience. I was hoping to get hired the minute I walked in.
Getting hired was definitely not as simple as thought it would be. I had to come back several times before I was even granted an interview. However, I was determined. McDonald's was going to hire me whether they wanted to or not. I finally got to speak with the store manager and I told her about myself and my family and what my situation was. I told her that I would be the happiest employee she had ever had. She hired me on the spot. I was so happy I could have cried.
I had a bit of a rocky start. The store was a total mess and the management team was very disorganized. I had to ask five different people where I could find the sauces so that I could restock them at the front counter. I was beginning to get really disgruntled when there was a major upheaval in the store resulting in the demotion of both the store manager and the assistant manager. All of a sudden I had a brand new management team and I was worried. Employees were being terminated right and left and I was terrified that I would be on the firing list as well.
A month passed and the new management team worked very hard to get the store clean and reorganized. My new managers started paying specisl attention to me. I recieved alot of praise and encouragement. I had fallen under the radar of not only the new management team but upper management as well. I recieved three promotions in one day and became a manager myself. Before I knew what was happening, I was enrolled in Shift Mangagement
