Divorce is never pleasant, and the process of going from separation to that divorce decree can be excruciating and emotionally taxing. When that divorce is done in the full light of the media, it can become a circus.
When Paul McCartney remarried after his long time spouse's death, I wasn't surprised. His life with Linda was one where they were a true partnership. They never spent time apart. They were the pencil and eraser. Where there was one, the other would be. McCartney needs that companionship. However, finding another person like Linda just isn't easy to do. She was the love of his life, and no one could take her place, which doesn't mean he can't love and be happy with another woman.
Unfortunately, the woman he chose was not the right one. There was always something about Heather Mills that didn't sit right with me. She had a cause, the land mine thing, and McCartney began to support that full tilt. She also didn't get along too well with the children. Now, children can be very loyal to deceased parents, but these kids weren't young children. They're grown up adults who understand the need for sharing your life with someone. I don't think they'd have problems with Heather simply because their father was moving on with his life.
As the divorce played out in the court of the public arena, it became clear that Heather Mills has some deep psychological problems. Her breakdowns on television and her rants to anyone who would listen were nightmarish. Her real mistake was when she began to attack Linda McCartney and Linda's relationship with Paul. She made accusations about that marriage that caused even Heather's best friends to step back and say, "Whoa!"
Heather Mills continued to argue that she wasn't a money monger. Okay, so why the demands for millions and millions of dollars? There's no doubt that Paul McCartney would pay a generous amount of child support for their daughter. He loves her, and he's a great father. No one would question that. So, what was the problem?
The problem is this. For as much as Mills spouted she wasn't after McCartney's money, that's exactly what she went after. He had offered her a tidy sum at the start that would make any woman smile, but she wanted more ... and more ... and more.
Mills image took a hard hit. The breakdowns, the accusations about Linda, and the claims to not be after money when her actions spoke otherwise put Mills in a bad light. That's when she appeared on Dancing with the Stars. I remember thinking she must be desperate to get people to like her. She just had no business or reason for being on that show. They centered her appearance around her leg, and that was definitely admirable. I in no way am criticizing that or her courage for what she accomplished on that show, but it was an intentional, well-timed public appearance designed to try and get people on her side. I don't believe it worked.
The divorce finally settled, and Mills didn't get anywhere near what she wanted, but she still walked away with plenty. It's just a sad state of affairs when someone gets so greedy. Her few years with McCartney did not entitle her to his mega-millions which are rightfully those of his children. I sincerely hope Mills has gotten some psychiatric treatment and that she's moving on with her life at last.
As for Sir Paul McCartney, he's still the favorite. He handled the divorce with as much class and dignity as he could. He took the high road, even when Heather Mills was slumming at her worse. For me, McCartney's silly love songs reign supreme, and I'm glad he's out of this torturous relationship.
