Today, with a bevy of varieties and flavors in baby food, introducing your 4 to 6 month old to new ones, can be both an enjoyable and eyeopening experience. However, there is a need for caution.
As a result of family history, or a child's predisposition, some babies may exhibit certain food allergies. Unfortunately, since babies are not able to communicate on the same level as an adult, it is often diificult for parents to determine whether or not their little one suffers from such a condition. Therefore, what signs are available to help a parent recognize food allergies in their babies?
* Signs To Look For.
1.) constipation
2.) coughing
3.) diarrhea
4.) difficulty in breathing (sometimes displayed as congestion, or wheezing)
5.) excessive gassiness, or stomach bloating
6.) runny nose
7.) skin rash (resembling hives)
8.) uncharacteristic (unusual) daytime crankiness
9.) watery eyes
10.) vomiting
It's important to note, that an allergic reaction usually occurs within 24 hours of eating a new food.
Since most babies are most likely to be allergic to certain foods, pediatricians often advise parents to avoid introducing these foods until after the first year of age:
1.) citrus (like grapefruit or oranges-not the same as "citric acid" which is a purified substance added to a majority of baby foods-thereby aiding in the sterilization of them)
2.) corn
3.) egg
4.) milk
5.) nuts
6.) soy (soy beans, soy milk)
7.) wheat (Gluten is a protein found in some cereals such as wheat. It is responsible for an intestinal disorder called "celiac disorder". It has been suggested, that one waits until their baby is 8 months old before introducing foods made with wheat-pastas, bread, mixed cereal etc.)
In addition, if there is a family history of allergies, foods that are considered to be highly allergenic should also be avoided. Foods such as:
1.) buckwheat, berries
2.) cinnamon, chocolate, citrus fruits, corn, coconut
3.) dairy products
4.) egg whites
5.) mustard
6.) nuts (all kinds)
7.) pork, peanut butter, peas
8.) soy, sugar, shellfish
9.) tomatoes
10.) wheat
11.) yeast
In order to determine whether or not your baby is exhibiting a food allergy, it is wise to introduce only one new food at a time.
True, food allergies will limit what your baby can consume. However, recognizing the signs and educating yourself on what you can do about, will ensure your precious one a better quality of life.
