Yo, Adrian! You feelin' a cheesesteak? A real Philly style cheesesteak, complete with Cheese-Whiz and Amoroso rolls baked and shipped from Philadelphia? What about a slice of real Italian-style thin crust pizza? If you're in the mood for some transplanted Philadelphia cuisine, have a wander over to Phil's Famous Steaks, Pizzas & Hoagies in New Cumberland.
Owner Phil Calla opened his pizza and sub shop on 3rd
Street a little over two months ago. He feels his real Italian-style pizza and special sauce help him to stand out from the madding crowd. "Probably some of the things that stand out are our homemade sauce is very good. And our pizzas are very thin," Calla explains. The best selling pizza at Phil's Famous is the margarita, which consists of mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and Phil's homemade sauce. Calla also offers a multitude of mouthwatering strombolis. Calla explains: "As far as our bolis go, the house boli is probably our biggest boli seller, which is ham, capicola ham, black pepper ham, salami, sweet Italian sausage, cheese, a little bit of mustard and it's topped with a Parmesan herb blend and a house-made roasted garlic oil. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?"
Usually a man of few words, Calla opens up when he starts to describe the culinary offerings of his restaurant. For instance, he has a pretty good idea what to suggest for a first-time visitor. "I would recommend the roast pork with provolone (a hot sub) which is made in house. It's hard to find, you can't get that in a lot of places. It's simmered in a broth with garlic and herbs and then we put it on a roll and toast it in an oven. Then you can get the deluxe pork with fresh basil and roasted red peppers. Oh and the cheesesteak waffle fries. We put cheese-whiz and steak meat on waffle fries and then it's topped with mozzarella cheese and baked in the oven and served with spicy ranch sauce. It's not really heart-healthy but it's really good."
In keeping with his affection for the City of Brotherly Love, Phil's Famous ran specials on game nights during the World Series to show love for the Phillies. He plans to show the same love for the Eagles, the Flyers and the 76ers, should they continue Philly's winning streak.
