Tips for choosing your own writing space

As a writer, it is important to choose the best place to do your work. There are several factors involved in the process. Choosing the right space for writing can mean the difference between great creativity and writers block.

The following suggestions will give you some insight as to what you may want in your writers space:

1. Quiet- Writing takes a lot of concentration. Nothing can spoil a great moment in the writers mind as a sudden loud outburst from someone. The place that you choose should be as quiet as it possibly can. This will allow your thoughts to flow more freely and your work will get done much faster.

2. Inspiration- Every great artist needs inspiration to create their works of art. This is no less true of a writer. Your space should be some place that will inspire your heart to write the words that you want to put down. This could be something as simple as a window to look out of. As long as it inspires you to forge your words in print.

3. Spaciousness- Having an area that allows you to get up and move around is important. Although most of your time will be spent typing or penning your beloved words, you sometimes need to get up and stretch. Taking this little break away from the keyboard/pen to walk around the room and rest the mind and eyes helps refresh you so that you can keep working.

4. Light Vs. Dark- Depending on your writing style, you want a place that gives you just the right amount of light. If dark places inspire your writing then you might choose a place that the sun doesn't shine directly into it. It is even better if the room has no windows. If light is what gets the juices from your brain to your fingers to flow, then choose the sunniest place available. This little thing can make a huge different in your ability to write effectively.

5. Invaders from the planet reality- Finding a place with no phone lines and has a big sign on the door to enter at the risk of being hit by flying pens is the best possibility to concentrate wholly on your task. Multiple interruptions can put a cramp in your mind that simply won't go away. Keep those distractions down by choosing a spot that will likely keep those distractions to a minimum. You should be disturbed only in extreme situations.

6. Personality- Your space should have some personality to it. The color of the room and the dcor are what gives the room that special feel. This will help you want to stay in your area longer. If you are sitting in a dark basement with dripping water and cob webs, you may not want to be there too long.

7. Make it your own- Choose a spot that you can make your own. It shouldn't be in your bedroom or the living room. You need to make the space as writer friendly as possible. What that means is what you want it to mean. The room should be totally dedicated to your needs as a writer.

8. Sanctuary- Your space should be a sanctuary for you. This should be a place you can go to anytime of the day or night to get away from all the crazy things that go on in your day-to-day life. If you feel this is your sanctuary, you will become a better writer from simply entering the room. After all, writing is where a person with a love for his craft goes for solace.

The bottom line is that you need to choose a space of your own for writing that will inspire you to rise higher in the ranks of literature. Having this place to go will give you new inspiration that your readers will thank you for.
