Get that raise: What to do if the answer is no

by your boss. Thinks in terms of what you could learn from such mistakes and resolve not to repeat the same. Did you take the initiative? were you flexible and adaptable?, how was your relationship with your co-workers?, were you willing to stay late when required?. All these factors do play a part when it comes to getting a raise.

5. If you think that the management has overlooked some points, or has a wrong understanding of something, point that out in a polite way, laying down all facts and figures. Make sure you had listed all your achievements and quantified the results at the time of the performance review.

6. If general reasons like economic or market conditions are the reasons for not being given a raise, consider whether changing your job would help. General economic conditions affect all firms equally, and if you are new in a firm, you would be worse off than those who are already there before you.

7. If you feel you are going nowhere in your present firm, and the firm rewards only incompetence, start preparations to leave. Update your resume, brush up your old contacts, spend more time networking and indulging in professional activities, update yourselves with the latest developments related to your profession, and finally start looking for better opportunities.

8. Being denied a raise is usually a sign that you are not ranked among the top performers. This could put your job at risk if the company retrenches people when faced with recession or other bad times. While you may not be fired immediately, take heed of the warning time to save more and acquire new skills that will accelerate your job hunt when the need arises.

9. Irrespective of whether you are continuing with the same job or you are changing jobs, take extra effort to strike up a rapport with your boss, keep yourselves updated with the latest concepts related to your profession and act as a resource person to others, and finally keep detailed and specific records of your achievements and results. All these would help in getting a raise the next time round.

10. If you resign, do so in a cordial manner, for a good reference from the last employer will help you in your next job. You could also use the reference, and even consider joining again later.
