The Dominican Republic is a nation of amazing beauty and fascinating history here are some facts to wow you:

Name & Location

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean and shares its large island name Hispaniola with Haiti who country takes up the western side of the isle. The ocean to the north is the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea to the south. Around 10 million people are though to inhabit the Dominican Republic which covers a total land mass of 48,442 squared kilometers. As the main language in the DR is Spanish its is referred to by its citizens as repulika ominikana. The Capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo, it was Spain's first capital city in the New World when they conquered the island. The countries national currency is the Peso. Two more facts about the country are the national bird is the Palmchat (Cigua Palmera) and the national flower is the West Indian Mahogany (Swietenia Mahagon)

Language

The Main Language in the Dominican Republic is Spanish which was brought to the island when it was ruled by the Spanish. The people are of a mixed race which reflects the long history of occupiers of the country and is made up roughly of 73% mixed raced, 16% white Europeans (mainly Spanish & French from the countries occupations.) and 11% of black race mainly from Africa.

The People

People have a life expectancy of 75 years for women to only 69 years for men. People from the DR are know as Dominicans. The countries people mainly religion is Christianity again a influence brought over by the Spanish and others European settlers. It is estimated in 2008 that 16 % of the people were unemployed and around 23% were living below the poverty line. Environment

There are four main mountain ranges and four main rivers all packed onto this small island.
