Classroom management techniques for elementary school classes

by Duet Cuellar

Created on: March 04, 2009

My daughter started school this year and she is in Pre-K. Being a first time Mom, I had made myself some great opportunities to observe the class a lot. I have learned and found some great techniques that the teacher is using in the classroom and I am able to apply some of those techniques at home with my daughter. I found these classroom management skills effective and beneficial. Here I hope to share with any teacher or other parents out there who are interested.

1. Classroom Helpers

Children love to get involved, they love to be a part of everything. It is a great way to train them to be responsible and independent. To get each one engaged with a small task and to make them feel good about themselves. After all, when they are engaged with something, they get into less trouble.

To assign each student a task to help some daily routine, all take turns and they rotate to do different task each day. For example,

There is always one "Teacher Assistant" who helps the teacher to carry a little something, just paper or so.

The "Door Holder" is a person to hold the door for the whole class to go in & out of the door.

2 students will be assigned as Line Leaders so they lead the line to walk through the hallway, for the whole class to go from the classroom to the gym hall or to the lunch room back & forth.

"Check Light" is a person who will go at the end of the line to turn off the light after the whole class has left the room.

Prepare each student a name tag, and the first thing each morning, move around the names to put into different duty pouch each day.

2. Line-up Manner

To go in and out from the classroom to the arts room, or to the break room, etc., the students are asked to form in 2 lines. Each student will hold hand with a partner to walk in and out. This way the lines can be kept in shape. Try to always keep their focus on not loosing their partner so the line would be formed and they can go in and out of the rooms quickly and smoothly.

3. Reward System - A Star Chart

Throughout the day, any student can get rewarded for good behavior with a star to put in the star pocket. When they reach a total of 20 stars, they get to go to the "treasure chest" to pick a toy.

Personally I think this is such a fabulous idea and we have started using the same system in our house and we get great result out of it. Our daughter started to "work" hard to earn her stars. When a goal is set, she is more responsive to the things we are asking her to cooperate. Every time I see my
