Although there are many excellent organizations out there, I have to admit that I am partial to one that is both practical and beneficial. The National FFA Organization used to be called the Future Farmers of America until 1988, when the name was changed to reflect a more diverse population. Many people today still hear "FFA" and think, "Wow, farmers, great." But let me assure you, this extra-curricular organization is not all about plows, cows, and sows. FFA is not only an excellent organization for your children now, but also, for many years to come. This organization takes members from ages 12-21, and there are many benefits to joining. In addition to a free bi-monthly magazine, FFA members have the opportunities of a lifetime. The FFA is devoted to developing "Premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education," but it does much more than that! From a multi-level talent competition to a contest designed to find the student with the best entreprenuerial skills, FFA is filled with opportunities for all types of individuals. There are chances to travel to different states, or even different countries. And what better could interest your student than the opporunity to earn some extra cash? FFA has several programs to help your young adult make some money during high school. No matter the interest of your student, you have to be mindful of an organization that meets their wants and needs, and better develops them as a person. FFA is the organization for that!
