Know your way around a bar

by April Hillis

Created on: March 04, 2009

All of us like to go out every now and then and enjoy an evening out. Having said that, we have all at one point, been the "bar jerk" or "that girl." Hopefully I have some tips to ensure a fun and successful evening without being completely obnoxious. I give you..the guide to bar etiquette!

1. Always tip your bartender.

This applies even if you are receiving a free round. Usually, if you order four rounds, the fifth round is free (keep in mind this is an unwritten rule; if your bartender hates you for any reason the free round is not going to happen). The bartenders work for about $2.50- $3.00 an hour, so they rely on your tips.

If you are a generous tipper, they are more likely to remember you. Just remember that if you take care of the bartender they will take care of you. So tip, and tip well!

2. When trying to get the bartender's attention, do not wave a twenty dollar bill at him. You are not the only one in the bar with money.

If the bartender isn't paying attention to you, chances are he is waiting on someone that was there before you. On some occasions they honestly did not realize you were there.

Bartenders can tell a difference between people just hanging out at the bar, and people waiting on drinks. That being said, never whistle, snap, or yell "hey you!" That kind of behavior is going to put you on the bad list, and you will not get the free fifth round I spoke of above.

Be patient. Again take care of your bartender and they will take care of you!

3. Know what you are going to order before you summon the bartender over.

They have too many drinks to make to sit there and wait while you decide if you want a Margarita on the rocks or frozen. Again, don't get on their bad list.

4. If you are at a table with several friends, let the waitress know if you are all on the same check.

This will avoid any unnecessary trips to the computer at the end of the night.

5. Women: If a man offers to buy you a drink, or orders you a drink, make sure you watch the bartender prepare it.

Keep in mind that these are strange men that you have never met. Never be too trusting. By watching the drink being made and delivered to you insures that nothing was "slipped" into it. Put your safety before any possible booty call.

6. Again, your bartenders and wait staff work for tips. Yes, they get paid to serve you and clean your table when you leave. However, do not trash your table.

At closing time they are ready to go home just like any normal person. It is unacceptable for them to have to stay
