Poetry: The four-letter word

by Jodi Wallace

Created on: March 03, 2009

Like a thief in the night, it comes seeping into your veins
mingling and multiplying with your DNA.
Spreading its destructive radiation so deep

so wide as to leave a glowing green on the surface.

It tears away at your insides

and breaks down that which once made you safe.
Clean.
Leaving you susceptible to the other four-letter disease
Un-curable,
Un-treatable, but preventable

It arrives with all the common symptoms
Dreaming of what you can't have,
Craving what you can't have,
And a distinct foul odor of rotting corpse.

It is one of the seven deadly.
Envy.
