Choosing the ideal campsite is an essential part of the planning for a backpacking journey. It can make or break the enjoyment of the trip and there are many criteria which come into play, especially individual preferences. Facilities.

We all need different comforts. Be sure to find out if yours are covered by the campsite you are considering. After a whole day of backpacking, do you want to chill? Do you want shower and toilet facilities? Do you want entertainment? All these matter. Look fully into different campsites in the region you are considering, because each will have their own menu of facilities available to campers and will also give you a clue as to whether that campsite will suit you. For example, if you are not keen on the idea of camping with kids on the site, avoid those which offer too much child entertainment as these will be favored by families.

If you want to socialize with others, see what kind of leisure facilities the campsite offers as this may be a great place to meet others with like interests. It is important also to establish what shops are available on the campsite, as these may lighten your journey as it will be less necessary to carry huge stocks. This makes a great deal of difference to your enjoyment.

Location.

Where are the campsites located? This could be in the heart of the countryside, beside a lake or in a pretty landscaped area. Beware that if you are backpacking with children you will need to know which campsites are safe for them. If traveling alone, you may be more interested in the ambiance of the campsite, rather than convenience and want somewhere far away from roads, whereas others will be pleased of easy road access.

What the campsite offers.

Although you may think this is covered above, there is more offered by some campsites than others. For example, do they have facilities for medical aid? Backpacking can cause blisters or even strained limbs, and for safety's sake, you may want to check out whether there is staff available to help in the case of emergencies.
