Cyber Crime: A Look at Computer Crime Investigations Careers
In the age of technology, the Internet was born and with it came a whole new set of problems. Technology, laws, and training to combat those problems had to be integrated into our society. One of the biggest problems that have arisen from the Internet is child predators on line. Special training is needed to combat these predators. Anyone is interested in the cybercrime field of criminal justice should be prepared for years of learning, both in-course and previous to employment. It is the knowledge of the ever changing laws, methods of tracking, and methods of evidence gathering in child predator cases on the Internet that are used by specially trained individuals known as "cyber cops" to capture and prosecute the offenders.
Since the age of the Internet, laws have changed to protect our children while in cyber space. The Congress of the United States has met on this subject several times in the last few years. For instance, according to Bradley (2008), Congress signed a bill to protect children on-line known as the Broadband Data Improvement Act. The bill was for schools to be made to give education to their students on on-line safety and proper behavior while in on-line chat rooms. It should be noted, also, that in 2007 the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held hearings to review steps that the U.S. Congress could take to protect children from on-line predators (American Libraries, 2007). One of the biggest issues with laws regarding the Internet is the intrusion upon civil liberties as was suggested by Alan Davidson, Associate Director Center for Democracy and Technology, and special agent Magaw in testimony given before a congressional committee, Davidson in 2001on the "The Cyber Security Enhancement Act of 2001" (Congressional Testimony, 2001) and Magaw in 2007 on another bill before Congress (Congressional Testimony, 2007). The FBI has a special division dedicated solely for investigating computer and cyber crimes. This special division is called the Cyber Action Team or CATs. More information can be found on the FBI's website at http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/cyberhome.htm; there one can also report cybercrime as well. Carefully, society and the US government work with other international agencies toward establishing the laws and ways to protect both the rights of the citizens and the innocence of our children through trial and error everyday.
