KING PERSIMMON

Okra and tomatoes, my almost favorite dish!
And twice baked mashed potatoes is second on the list.
But when it comes to the all time first
For me and Mom and Dad,
It's the little fried persimmon, the best food we ever had!

Some folks might think that's crazy!
Whoever heard of such?
Persimmon cookies, maybe,
But fried persimmons? Yuch!

But they don't know the joy we had
From peeling those sweet critters.
And mushing up their insides
And making little fritters.

Well, some day we'll tell the story
And let the whole world see
How this food fit for kings
Came to Mom and Dad and me.

Until then you'll have to wonder
How this choice could ever be.
How an ordinary persimmon
Could turn out to be King Bee

In the mean time we'll keep peeling
And mashing them and frying,
While you might conclude this crazy guy
Has done his share of lying!
