How to cope with the cost of living of today

by Ann E. Smith

We live in tough economic times, no doubt. The cost of living is increasing, yet salaries are not. Even worse, thousands of people are losing their jobs in massive company layoffs.

Given this challenging environment, how can you cope with the cost of living of today? What are some things you can do to live within your means?

Below are some tips that can help you cope economically.

* Create a monthly budget, and live within it.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they do not create, and live within, a budget. They often have no clue about how much they spend each month, and often go into great credit card debt as a result.

You can avoid this conundrum by building a simple monthly budget in Excel. List your monthly expenses, including a bucket for money to go into savings. Compare that to your monthly income.

Once you have this budget created, you will get a good idea as to whether you are living within your means. You may need to cut in some areas. If so, you will need to make some careful decisions.

* Buy grocery items at sale prices, when possible, and use coupons.

With increasing food prices, you need to put some effort into planning your grocery shopping. Do some price checks at local grocery stores to determine where you can get certain items at the lowest prices.

Review the weekly circulars to see what specials are being run at any given supermarket. Also collect coupons from your Sunday newspaper. As long as you only use coupons on items you really need, you can save some money this way.

* Be realistic about your entertainment budget.

People spend a lot of money eating and drinking at restaurants and bars. These bills can add up very quickly.

Be realistic about how many nights out you can afford, and if this is really how you want to spend your money. Make it a point to spend some nights at home.

You can invite your friends over for pizza night and beer. Everyone can pitch in to the total cost. You will all have a great time, but at a fraction of the cost of going out for dinner and drinks.

* Learn to find joy in simple things.

Many people make the mistake of thinking that they need to spend money to have fun. That is just not the case. You do not have to go buy the latest technological gadget to have a good time.

Learn to enjoy a walk in a park with your dog, or a cup of coffee that brew at home. Try your hand at some crossword puzzles or get involved with some volunteer work.

* Take a road trip instead of a luxury vacation.

You may need to lower your expectations a bit in order to live within your means in today's world. Instead of expecting a luxury trip for vacation, take your kids camping for a weekend.

Again, simplifying can bring far more joy than you may realize, and it will help you better afford today's high cost of living.
